Japanzon Asakusa Store buys toys and games over the counter. In Japanese this is called kaitori / 買取: a shop buys second-hand items directly from you. You bring your items, a member of staff looks at them and tells you the price, and then you decide.

You do not need to speak Japanese. Our staff speak Japanese, English and French. Chinese and Spanish are also available on Wednesdays and Sundays.

If you bought too much on your trip

Your suitcase will not close, or you bought the same figure twice. The counter works the same way for a visitor: you show us what you have, a member of staff looks at it and tells you a price. If you are not resident in Japan, your passport is the document to bring.

Come while you still have a day or two in Tokyo, not on your way to the airport. Anything we do not buy goes back in your suitcase.

If you are leaving Japan

You lived in Tokyo for a few years. You bought games, figures, cards and model kits. Now you have a flight date, a suitcase and too many boxes.

Bring what you want to sell to our counter in Asakusa. Do not plan this for your last day. Come a week or two before your flight: whatever we do not buy leaves the shop with you, and you will still need time for it.

You do not know us yet, so here is what you can check before you decide anything.

A licence with a number

Buying second-hand goods in Japan requires a licence. Ours is a second-hand dealer licence, kobutsusho kyoka / 古物商許可, number 第307742116189号, issued by the Tokyo Metropolitan Public Safety Commission.

A registered company, a real shop

The shop is run by Japanzon Co., Ltd. / 株式会社ジャパンゾン, a registered Japanese company. We buy in person, at the counter, with no middleman. The shop is at street level in Asakusa, opposite Asakusa Public Hall, Asakusa Kokaido / 浅草公会堂.

You are free to say no

A member of staff looks at each item and tells you the price. If the amount does not suit you, you take everything home. Coming only to hear a valuation, with no intention of selling, is welcome.

How it works

1. Bring your items to the shop

Come to the counter with what you want to sell. If you have many items, please phone ahead. It helps us to have someone free for you. If you still have the boxes, manuals, cables or controllers, bring them with the item.

2. A member of staff looks at each item

Staff check the items one by one and tell you the price for each.

3. You decide

If you agree with the price, we go ahead with the paperwork and you are paid on the spot, the same day. If you do not agree, you take your items home. You decide after you have seen the amount, not before.

What to bring with you

The Japanese law on second-hand dealing requires identity checks on sellers. Our own rule is simple: we ask every seller for one of these documents, whatever the item is.

• My Number card / マイナンバーカード — front side only
• Passport
• Residence card — zairyu card / 在留カード
• Special permanent resident certificate / 特別永住者証明書
• Health insurance qualification certificate — shikaku kakuninsho / 資格確認書

If you are not resident in Japan, your passport is the simplest document to bring. Sellers under 18 need the consent of a parent or guardian.

What we do not do

• We buy at the counter only. We do not collect items from your home and we do not buy by post.
• We do not give valuations by email, by photo or online. We have to see the item.
• We are not a disposal service. Anything we do not buy stays yours and goes home with you, and we cannot take items away for you.

So if you are emptying a flat, deal with the items that have resale value first, and with the rest through the normal rubbish rules of your ward. Your building manager or your local ward office can explain that part.
